This toolkit was developed by the Adolescent Trauma and Substance Abuse Committee of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network to raise awareness about the needs of youth with traumatic stress and substance abuse problems, as well as to promote evidence-based practices in clinical settings. It is meant to serve as a training guide for providers working with this population. Guidance is provided in the following areas of mental health treatment for adolescents: 1. Making the Connection: Trauma and Substance Abuse 2. Understanding Traumatic Stress in Adolescents: A Primer for Substance Abuse Providers 3. Understanding Abuse in Adolescents: A Primer for Mental Health Professionals 4. Treatment for Youth with Traumatic Stress and Substance Abuse Problems: Information on treatment recommendations and evidence based interventions 5. Engaging Adolescents in Treatment (This report was published in 2008).
