Creating a Trauma-Informed Community in Central Texas

The Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development (KPICD) of Texas Christian University developed Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI®), an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. TBRI® uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors. Travis County of Central Texas was the first testing ground for a community roll-out of TBRI®. The inititative in Travis County then became the foundational platform on which the Travis County Collaborative for Children (TCCC) was built with numerous iterations to improve collaborations and understandings within the community. KPICD conducted a survey of agencies and individuals and learned that many were implementing trauma-informed practices using TBRI and were invested in continuing the successful momentum of the program. This report outlines the stages of creation of TCCC including the creation and planning of the collaborative initiative, development, training (shared language) implementation, assessment/evaluation/iteration, building sustainability and magnifying impact.
