Building Community for Foster Families - Fostering Communities Initiative supported by The Duke Endowment

Fostering Communities launched as a partnership with United Methodist congregations in 10 rural North Carolina counties, but it has expanded to other rural churches as well., including churches and communities in South Carolina. The work developing foster communities begins by helping faith communities understand the trauma that children in care have already experienced. Programs are using an evidence-informed training model called Together Facing the Challenge, which was developed at Duke University. This program helps churches become "missional hubs" which may include providing office space for foster care trainings and workshops, supporting food drives, and delivering food to foster homes. This article shares how both foster parents and foster children are supported by churches extending the work of "missional hubs."
